NOTES FROM ORIGIN:On the heels of our sourcing trip to Antigua, Guatemala, Colectivo's green coffee buyer Cody Kinart and photographer/videographer Kelly Anderson traveled nine hours to Copan, Honduras. The purpose of this trip was threefold: to source some delicious coffees from Honduras, attend and judge Capucas Coffee Cooperative Limited’s (COCAFCAL) 9th annual “Te Van a Conocer Compa” coffee competition, and strengthen our relationship with the cooperative’s producers.

Capucas Cooperative was founded in 1999 and has since grown to more than 700 members who actively participate in COCAFCAL's vision and mission. In addition to growing coffee, the cooperative has developed social programs supporting education, health, recreation, a virtual library, and more. The coop has partnered with local and international experts to diversify their agricultural and economic efforts into the areas of beekeeping, organic fertilizer, Fair Trade lemongrass crops, cultivation of fruit and ornamentals, and coffee quality training for farmers and future generations.

9th Annual “Te Van a Conocer Compa!” Coffee Competition (You’re Going to Meet)

Organized by Atlas Coffee Importers, this annual coffee competition serves as an opportunity to connect producers with roasters and build lasting relationships within the coffee supply chain. Farmers are encouraged to strive for continuous improvement, produce high quality coffees, and showcase Honduran coffees as single-farmer lots, rather than combining them. We did indeed get to know the producers of Capucas.

We were even invited to plant and name a coffee tree at the Capucas nursery, which we named Mina in honor of our Blue Heeler mascot. We can’t wait to see how she grows!

On the final day of Te Van a Conocer Compa, the cooperative hosted a celebration attended by more than one thousand people from throughout the community. The top 10 coffees were announced amidst a flurry of dancers, a sword ceremony, and a steak lunch.

The gathering was an inspiration not only to the group of coffee buyers gathered there, but also to the rest of the Capucas community. For roasters, this event provides a unique opportunity to meet with producers and build long-standing relationships. The people of Capucas truly displayed their pride and dedication, and we are excited to share the results of their hard work with you!
