Meet Miriam Monteiro de AguiarFriday, Feb. 24: 7pm - 11pmBack Room @ Colectivo ProspectLive music @ 9pm featuring Samba Unidos MKECelebrate Carnaval w/ live samba music and Brazilian food & coffee samples! Our Featured Farm selection for February comes to us from Fazenda Cachoeira in southern Minas Gerais, Brazil's largest coffee-producing state. In September of 2016, we had the pleasure of visiting the farm and meeting fifth-generation farm owner Miriam Monteiro de Aguiar. In a country dominated by enormous farms practicing chemical-intensive agriculture, Miriam isn’t your run-of-the-mill coffee producer. She holds a master’s degree in Rural Administration & Development and is a strong advocate for women within the specialty coffee industry.Starting in 1993 when she and her husband Rogério Daros converted Fazenda Cachoeira to an organic farm, Miriam has championed sustainable and biodynamic agriculture. More recently she has dedicated herself to pursuing quality in the cup by attaining her Q Grader license and outfitting a cupping lab right on the farm. Her latest initiative is to help improve the visibility and participation of women in the specialty coffee industry.Miriam serves on the board of directors of the Associação Café Orgânico Brasileiro and is also active in the Brazil chapter of the International Women in Coffee Alliance (IWCA). We hope you'll join us in welcoming her to Milwaukee on Feb. 24!About Samba Unidos MKE: Members of Samba da Vida, Tropical Tomorrows, and Panadanza Dance Company come together to present Samba Unidos MKE, a Carnaval inspired group of Milwaukee's longest running Brazilian music and dance performing groups.Free to attend & open to the public.
